Since I started teaching again at the end of 2011 I have helped 50+ people start or get better at playing the guitar and begin to express themselves through music.
They have ranged from teenagers who want to play the electric guitar, people in their 20s who want to be able to play to entertain their mates, to mature adults who have finally decided to learn the guitar or wanted to get more accomplished and relaxed in their playing.
With the help of their parents we have got many children enjoying learning a musical instrument (the very versatile guitar).
During the lessons I may use the internet to assist in the teaching process and show how it can be used as a resource to make your learning more fun and efficient. Sometimes I will record video clips to help you with your practice.
Most people don't have the time and money to commit to weekly lessons so normally we arrange fortnightly lessons.
The lessons are £20 for 55 minutes. The first one is free.

I've done guitar in the past and had to give it up for studies. However, recently I wanted to try and learn again for my own personal preference. I looked for a guitar teacher for a while and after this I found James and went and had my first few lessons with him. Being a student of 16 I really understand the importance of having a teacher that is down to earth, friendly and helpful because without this it can sometimes be a struggle to want to learn or to engage with the teacher. James has all these qualities and I have been able to learn from him with ease and I have not ever had a bad experience and have always left knowing more and feeling more confident about my ability to play guitar. He is a really supportive, knowledgeable and friendly person and I would recommend to any one trying to find a guitar teacher.

We've been having lessons for over a year now and had no previous experience of playing a guitar. James has been very patient in teaching us, and really helped us develop different techniques. We both really enjoy our lessons and will be continuing with them - recommended.

My then 11 year old daughter had acoustic guitar lessons with James for two years, having previously done classical at school. James's lessons were always planned, well structured and delivered in a thorough, encouraging, patient and always friendly manner. Alternate weeks worked very well for a busy mum and daughter. I would not hesitate in recommending for any level of ability.

I had lessons for around two years with James Drake having previously had lessons at a local shop near work. My initial strumming technique was so poor, everything I attempted to play was so aggressive. James taught me how to strum correctly and gently with minimum effort creating a much better sound. Covers all the basics with chord shapes and changes and open to suggestions on how best to form the chord with your own physical limitations on bending and stretching fingers etc. Recommended tutor.

My 9 year old daughter started traditional acoustic guitar lessons with James about 18 months ago. She knew nothing about music or guitars before she started and with only a 1 hour lesson every 2 weeks she had advanced brilliantly and is so keen and enthusiastic about her lessons. James is a patient, fun and trustworthy teacher whom I would definitely recommend.
I would highly recommend James to anyone who's wanting to learn how to play the guitar. I'd always wanted to learn as a teenager but I was convinced I was musically challenged along with the rest of my family. However, with the help of James I can actually play and I'm really proud of myself. He is a patient teacher and tries to establish what it is you want to learn, whether it's your favourite songs or if you want to write your own. As a 22 year old I was sceptical whether or not I could find a teacher who would know the genre of music I listen to and help me learn how to play it, James knew quite a lot of the stuff I listened to and also researched the bands I like that he'd never heard of. If you're unsure of whether it's for you or not you should just go and give it a try. I did and I thoroughly enjoy it.
